“I’m not So Innocent Anymore” is a video performance inspired by the imagery of butcher shops, hanging meat, and the colour, smell and texture of flesh. Here Soukaina Joual appropriates then deconstructs the devices associated with slaughterhouses, in order to bring out a new range of meaning. The aesthetics of meat recall the horror and violence of life; in its duality between the morbid and the political.
The representation of raw meat, as well as carrying it, cutting it and grinding it addresses the aesthetic of war and its disturbing aspects. Through this act of protesting, the artist attempts to reflect on political and social images of the Arab spring, but also invites the viewer to question the portrayal of the body, violence and certain political contexts in the mass media.
“I’m not So Innocent Anymore” was performed during The New Talents Biennial, Cologne in 2016.
